I mentioned yesterday that I have a Frank Quitely tattoo. Here’s a few pics.
This is the original piece. Cover of the superb comic by Chaykin, Tishman and Hahn for which Quitely Illustrated the covers.She is only a part of my comic babes leg piece. Joined by this slayerette on one side and Cassie Hack on the other. Obviously it is still a work in progress.

My latest interview with Grant Morrison is up on the New Statesman today. We chatted about Wonder Woman, finishing Action Comics and Batman Inc, stepping away from DC monthlies, his MBE, Happy, Multiversity, Before Watchmen, MorrisonCon and more. Enjoy!
“[The] guy that ate Supergods!” Morrison laughs. “Cooked it and ate it on the basis that it was my fault that people couldn’t find alternative comics in their local comics stores. And I was standing in the way, pretending to be the face of alternative comics, and how I actually stood for corporate this or corporate … you know, I’m the man – again as I say, I’m a freelance writer, I’m not on staff at any company. But this guy ate the book!”
That’s quite impressive.
“It certainly is! His shit must have looked like a William Burroughs cut-up!”

On what Grant was wanting to see from Frank Quitely at MorrisonCon:
“Well they wanted, they had this big idea, they said we want Frank Quitely to come on and design an entire universe.” he laughs. “I went, what the fuck?! You’ve gotta be joking! And then I told them about this thing… he draws these grotesques, these anatomical creatures who’ve got like heads hanging between their legs, but they all work. And he’s got like years of work on this stuff – he calls them the Bumheids. It’s them sitting smoking and having tea and everything, but everything’s wrong, it’s all in the wrong place, and legs coming out the top. So I kind of want to divert it… he won’t have time to create a future world, but he has created this alternate reality where people have arses for faces!”

Dundee Comics Day: Grant Morrison & Friends
With MorrisonCon coming up at the end of September, there are more than a few UKers wishing they could make the trip to Vegas. And even if you are going to the entertainment capital of the world, chances are you’ll be up for this too!
The facebook page for Dundee Comics Day, an annual event in the home of comics, has published the promo image for this years event in October. And guess who the star guest is?
The one day event is a favourite amongst many comic creators and artists, and has in the past featured such people as Warren Ellis, Bryan Talbot, John Wagner, Alan Grant, Rian Hughes, and Frank Quitely, but this year looks to be something special.
Announcements on other guests and tickets to follow.
A lovely friend of mine sent me a couple of Starblazer issues written by Grant Morrison this week - including his first one, #15, Algol the Terrible which Morrison also did the artwork for.
And Algol is of course the star that is also known as the Demon Star, the name deriving from the Arabic ‘ra’s al-ghūl’. Page 1 above shows the enemy spacecraft with the demon’s head emblem. Synchronicity!
Starblazer was a wee small format comics anthology in the UK, alongside sister publication Commando (which is still going strong today).
Morrison did his own artwork for other comics too: his Near Myths stories, and his Captain Clyde strip. He switched to writing only when he made the jump to mainstream comics for the sake of time.
